Discrimination & Inequity

On September 16th, 2008, the European Commission’s first ‘EU Roma Summit’ took place in Brussels, initiated by the Commission President José Manuel Barroso and the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The Summit aimed to promote inclusion and to tackle concrete problems of Roma across Europe.
In spite of the fact that the Roma community is the biggest European ethnic minority with 10 to 12 million people living in Europe and approximately 5 to 6 million people living in the member states of the European Union, the political, legal and social situation of Roma is placed on the agenda of the European Union only in the year 2008.
